Can anyone recommend independent research topic in biology?

I am very interested in Evolutionary Biology( currently in a stupid IT company :( ) . Does anyone have any idea for any independent research topic which will not involve access to a lab ? I want to do Phd in this subject & since i have only computers background, i doubt any college would be willing to take me unless i do some research(although still unlikely they will admit me). Also, is it really hard to switch from computers to Evo. Biology(should be easier if i do Bioinformatics but thats not in my interest) ?

Sorry if this is not the right place to post this question.

You can try to Email a biologist who may be working with evolutionary systems and tell him about your abilities. There may be a requirement for you for a project.
