Need for a materialistic understanding of society
#1
Dear friends,

In order to propagate a materialistic world view in the society, it is important for us to apply the same scientific vigour which is used to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos to understand the socio-economic and political system which is responsible for the sustenance of the religioius world view. While ruthlessly criticising religion we must also ponder why a religious world view is so much predominant in the society. What is the origin and evolution of the religious world view? We all know religion provides an illusory mental peace to the masses. But we must also extend our understanding to grasp what is the material condition which compel people to go to the fold of religion.
I find Karl Marx's philosophy of dialectical materialism as the most scientific philosophy ever propounded in the history of human civilisation. Dialectical materialism looks at every phenomenon in its evolution and changingness and not as an ossified thing. Applying this philosophy to the human society Marx developed the principles of communism which continue to inspire all those struggling for the rights of the oppressed and exploited in any part of the world. The causes of the socio-economic and ecological problems of any society can only be discerned if we have a scientific unerstanding about the mode of production of society because it is the production system which sustains the human civilisation and provides a base on which the political, legal and philosophical systems stand. The problem with the other philosophies is that they seek the solution of human sufferings outside the apart from the production system and process which is unrealistic and utopian.
Marx explained the existence of the religious thoughts in the society as intrinsically linked to the struggle of the classes in a class society. Following quotation of Marx provides an insight into the Marxist understanding of religion:

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people.
The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions. The criticism of religion is therefore in embryo the criticism of the vale of woe, the halo of which is religion”

We have a philosophy section where we discuss formal and informal philosophy. Many of the ideas that you are talking about are part of formal philosophy. Your post has been moved to the Naturalism forum.
