Nirmukta Virtual Conference - 2011
#1
A group of Nirmukta coordinators "met" online last Saturday, the 5th of February 2011. One of the points of discussion was Nirmukta's next online conference.

Last year less than 20 people came together online, and our event was plagued by "technical problems". But it was a very inspiring meeting, and it set the ball rolling for Siddharth, myself and many others. The support that Prof Nayak gave us was indispensable, and today the online work that all the coordinators at Nirmukta have put in has spawned regional groups around the country.

Our core group of coordinators will meet again next weekend, along with some coordinators of the regional groups, and this issue of Nirmukta's next online conference will be decided. The purpose of this thread is to work out the details and encourage community participation on the same.

I am new to this group. What was the technology used last year to make the online conference possible? Can I suggest using IRC as a way to have an online conference if audio/video isn't required? For the users, it could be as simple as clicking a link to: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=nirmukta

For the organizers, it is simply about relying on the Freenode IRC network, relax and enjoy the discussion.

i agree. imo it doesn't get simpler, easier and more accessible than irc.

Thanks for the suggestions, Eolgon and Susam!

Last year we used tinychat (http://tinychat.com). The conference was audio only, and even then we had bandwidth problems and access issues (for those behind a firewall). This year we are planning on doing it using an online virtual environment platform. The idea is to make it more like a convention.

The coordinators are meeting on the 26/27th weekend and we will announce the date and details of the conference after that. Meanwhile, please keep the ideas coming Big Grin

Hey Srini, I think there has been a bit of misunderstanding here. The meeting that took place last weekend was an internal one on skype, between coordinators of Nirmukta. The convention that we are talking about (which we discussed at the meeting) is to take place in June/July on a virtual environment platform.

Hi Srini, the Convention that Ajita has mentioned will in all probability happen on a weekend.

In light of our activities focusing on building up NIrmukta's regional groups, this virtual conference will ba pushed back to the end of this year. But I am still committed to making this happen.

The wikipedia page on Virtual worlds has some useful basic information for anyone not sure about what exactly we're talking about:

I've had a chance to try out a few virtual world platforms since this thread was started.
My initial explorations focused on a business-friendly virtual conferencing platform by Ayaya, called Web.alive. http://avayalive.com/WaStore/Overview.aspx
After some experimenting, it became apparent that this was not the right platform for us.

Currently Im checking out a few virtual world platforms that have made virtual education a focus.

The biggest of these is Active Worlds, and they seem to be doing exactly what we need:

If anyone is interested in helping with the research for this project, we could use the additional input. Eek
