Vatican decries Physiology and Medicine Nobel Prize 2010

In this recent blog post evolutionary biologist and author Prof. Jerry Coyne cites a BBC news item reporting the head of the Pontifical Academy of Life condemning the Nobel committee's recognition of In-Vitro Fertilization.

Quote:It’s ludicrous pronouncements like this, against a procedure that has helped so many people, that will spell the end of the Catholic church.

He's quite right with the above. It is really weird, the way they accept evolution (the Pope does, and therefore the Vatican too) as true, but have such medieval ideas about fertilized eggs. I don't know much about this debate, so does the ethics debate go any deeper than this?

They just seem to be concerned with the eggs that stay frozen and will end up wasted if they are not used. Wasn't there anyone who questioned this statement by asking if all the eggs that are produced in a female turn out to be babies? They just seem to be concerned with making an argument!

It's not eggs that they are concerned about. It's embryos. They consider a fertilized egg as having a soul which needs saving by Jesus Christ.
